Edgar Martínez (born January 2, 1963), nicknamed "Gar" and "Papi", is a Puerto Rican former professional baseball player who is currently the senior director of hitting strategy coach for the Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Aug 23, 2024 · Martinez was announced as the Mariners’ new hitting coach ahead of Friday’s game against the Giants, selected by new manager Dan Wilson as part of a personnel overhaul that included the departures of their predecessors, Jarret DeHart and Scott Servais, respectively.

Edgar Martinez, the best designated hitter in Major League Baseball history, retired at the end of the 2004 season after playing his entire 18-year Major League career for the Seattle Mariners. Edgar was inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame on June 2, 2007.

He led the AL in RBI in 2000 with 145, powered the Mariners to 116 wins the following year and was named the winner of the Outstanding Designated Hitter Award five times in a seven-year period. In 2004, that award was renamed the Edgar Martinez Award. “He’s going to beat you,” said former Mariners teammate Mike Cameron.
