A federal judge dismissed the claims against Tarrant County and six of the named jailers, but nine defendants remain.

A judge dismissed Tarrant County and six other defendants from a civil suit over the death of an inmate at the Tarrant County Jail. Anthony Johnson Jr died while in custody in April 2024 after a struggle with detention officers outside of his cell.

The Tarrant County sheriff’s office has notified the public of the year’s first in-custody death at the county jail Saturday. The inmate, whose identity has yet to be reported publicly by the county medical examiner’s office, died at John Peter Smith Hospital two days after attempting suicide, according to a news release.

The Tarrant County Sheriff's Office says an inmate died after an attempted suicide over the weekend. According to the sheriff's office, the 36-year-old was booked into the jail on Feb. 4 and died at John Peter Smith Hospital on Feb. 8 "following complications from an attempted suicide."

In addition to the county, Judge Reed O’Connor dismissed six individual defendants named in the original case, the order states.

Johnson died in Tarrant County Jail custody, and his death was ruled a homicide. Two jailers were charged with murder and 15 were included in a lawsuit filed by his family.
