Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg flirted with the course record in Wednesday’s opening round of the Farmers Insurance Open before settling for a 9-under 63 on the North Course for a two-stroke lead at Torrey Pines.

The rising star is quietly having a strong start to the season, though his odds to win the Masters haven’t moved much yet.

Ludvig Åberg shot a 9-under 63 -- the lowest opening-round score of his career -- to lead the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines by two strokes.

Aberg birdied the first three holes and eight in all, with an eagle, at Torrey Pines and posted a 9-under round to lead by three.

Torrey Pines is the replacement site for the Genesis Invitational. The Tiger Woods-hosted signature event typically is held at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.

So after they finish today, the field above the cut line will roll into the third round of the fourth PGA Tour event of the year. The tournament, which started Wednesday, will wrap up Saturday.

The California Swing with the Farmers Insurance Open, an annual PGA Tour stop since the 1950s. Players will attempt to navigate the narrow fairways, thick rough and small Poa greens of Torrey Pines, one of the premier municipal golf courses in America and also the host of two U.

Aberg backed up his breakout 2023 season with a stellar 2024 that featured eight top-10s and runner-up finishes at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the Masters and the BMW Championship. All that was missing was a victory, something to add to his breakthrough at the 2023 RSM Classic.
